Argosy III - Vaughn Martens

Stop No. 21
Location: Racine, Wisconsin
Photographer: Vaughn Martens
Date: May 2007

Argosy Journal:

I bought my first Argus, a C3 MatchMatic, in about 1960. I used it as the Year book photographer all through High School. It began my love affair with Argus. I put many hundreds of rolls through it before graduating to a more advanced camera. This was the first time I actually used a C4 and I really liked it. After getting the results of the first roll, I determined the gear mesh between the RF and lens had shifted and it would not focus correctly. I had to readjust the gear mesh. I think I used Walgreen brand ASA 200 color film. My collecting is centered on Argus and American made 35mm cameras.

The Photographs:

This photo is of one of my favorite subjects, the Root River. I had the camera in the early spring a couple of weeks after the snow and ice had melted. This is a quiet backwater which is usually inaccessible later in the year due to stands of reeds that grow in the area.

The reflections of the blue sky and the sound of Pileated Woodpeckers prompted me to take this photo of the trees in this snow melt pool along thr Root River. By summer the underbrush is so thick that the area can't be approached.
