Argosy III - Hrad Kuzyk

Stop No. 1
Location: Iraq
Photographer: Hrad Kuzyk
Date: February 2006

About the photographer:

I bought my first Argus (post-war A2B) at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto in 2001. After that, the simplicity and style of the Argus A series of cameras had me captivated. Normally, I am a mechanical engineer and hope to return to this job when I get back from Iraq. (I deployed to the Iraqi Theater of Operations in Nov 04 and expect to return to the States in Apr 06)

The photographs:

This is an aerial view of Iraqi Highway 1, taken from a Blackhawk helicopter that is flying "nape of the earth". Also visible is the door gunner's M240B machine gun which, for some reason, has a laser sight attached to it. Highway 1 starts all the way in the south at Kuwait and runs through Baghdad, Tikrit, Sammarra, and Mosul to go all the way up to Habur Gate, which is on the border with Turkey. Certain stretches of this road are among the most dangerous in the world (for Coalition Forces).

7-11 Photo: This is not a real 7-11 store but a store owned and run by local nationals (most likely Kurds or Turks). The name and imagery of "7-11" is used to attract US soldiers and give them an easy name to remember. Inside, they sell anything from bootleg DVDs to handmade carpets to fake Rolexes to the satellite dishes seen in the photo. (I have purchased all but the satellite dish) "Haji stores" is the slang term used to refer to these stores.
